SCORPIO! New Moon Solar Eclipse 2013 – November 3, 2013
by dayna lynn on October 18th, 2013
I decided not to write about the eclipse in Aries that occurred on October 18, 2013 because I was deep in obsession reflection about my personal life and dealing with some old demons. Now, I’m finally able to creep out of my cave for a bit to share with you the intense and powerful energy emerging as we enter the phase of the New Moon Solar Eclipse in Scorpio.
Those of you who have experienced an astrology reading with me either in person, over the phone, or via a personalized written report know that I have a relentless drive to expose what is hidden in the subconscious mind as it is reflected in the natal chart. I pull no punches because I know that true change and empowerment lies in the ability to become aware of what motivates action and desires at the deepest levels. I have Mars conjunct Saturn in Scorpio in the 12th house.
It’s All About Scorpio!!!
If you’re uncomfortable with Scorpio energy, you are going to have a rough time beginning October 23, 2013 when the Sun enters Scorpio. And even those of us who are familiar with the depth Scorpio requires, this may be a bit much.
At that time, there will be 4 bodies in the sign: Sun, Mercury, Saturn, and the North Node. By the time we get to the New Moon Solar Eclipse in Scorpio on November 3, 2013, the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Saturn, and the North Node will be in Scorpio. AND in the Eclipse chart, Scorpio is rising because the New Moon is exact at sunrise. That makes 6 planets and points in Scorpio!

In short, Scorpio is about energy. The exchange of energy. And the power of transformation.
Now, in depth, we’ll talk about this within the context of the upcoming New Moon.
Even if you don’t understand the meaning any of the symbols in the chart pictured above, you can see just by looking that there is a concentration of energy at the left side of the circle. Those are all the planets and points in Scorpio at the time of the New Moon/Solar Eclipse. That means much of our energy and attention is diverted to one particular area of life. Even other areas of life become subjugated to what’s going on in the Scorpio area of our charts/lives.
What to make of all of Eclipse hoopla…
In the astrological community, there is a lot of fuss made about eclipses. We have our own form of sensationalism about them. For the most part though, they are a big deal. They tend to represent major turning points in the stories of our lives. Whenever I am doing consultations and I see that I client has a planet near the degree of a past eclipse, I already know that they have dealt with major drama in that particular area of their lives. They are probably still reeling from what has occurred.
As for this particular eclipse, it is a Solar Eclipse which means it is occurring at a New Moon. While New Moons are new beginnings and seed planting periods, they are first and foremost endings. There is a void perceived as we approach this New Moon and we are beckoned to fill it with something new and more authentic than what we were living with before.
Scorpio is about deep desire. It’s about why you want what it is that you want. Within your desire lies the power of transformation. This is the ringer right here: It’s never about getting what you want. It’s about the transformation that occurs as you seek out your desire.
A bit about Mercury Retrograde
Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio. During the messenger’s tenure in the sign of the phoenix, much has been revealed, deeply contemplated, and compulsively obsessed over. Yet, resolution has been unattainable. While it is usually a Lunar Eclipse that bring things to a head or culmination, the fact that retrograde Mercury is conjunct the North Node in Scorpio is quite a significant thing.
I’ve spoken before about the Nodes, but I’ll recap here: We are recognizing the simplicity of comfort, familiarity, and predictability. We cultivating deep awareness of our inner motivations and exposing where we are resistant to change.
With Mercury on the North Node, this eclipse brings messages and clarity around how and where we’ve been resistant to change. A message that empowers us to let go of what may be comfortable but ultimately inhibits evolution and growth. This plants a seed of opportunity for us to live authentically, without pretense, and to expose our truest desire in full awareness of the pathology that informs it.
Other contributing factors
Mars, the co-ruler of this eclipse, is in Virgo at the same degree as the Sun and Moon in Scorpio. Virgo is doing. It focuses on the task at hand with devotion and skill. This takes the Eclipse to the next level because now instead of just feeling that we want to transform, we can create methods and actually get good at this thing!
Adding to this is the fact that Saturn is right there anchoring the party. Saturn motivates us to grow up and be more mature and responsible by making us aware of our limitations. Ultimately, Saturn wants us to build something solid, upon a secure foundation, that will stand the test of time. While Saturn is in Scorpio working in cahoots with Pluto, together they are exposing the cracks in foundations of our lives, yet empowering us with the tools to heal and rebuild.
All together we have an ending and a beginning where we reflect upon where we fear change. We systematically and deeply probe our hearts and minds as we get to the bottom of why we want what we want. We ask ourselves, is it only important that our desire be fulfilled? Or is there something to be gleaned from the process and place of wanting?
Scorpio ≠ Sex
The final angle I want to talk about is that of sex and intimacy. Scorpio is erroneously associated with sex. I’d actually associate Leo with sex. Scorpio is about the exchange of energy. And for some sex is the ultimate. But being a water sign, Scorpio should more appropriately be associated with emotional energy.
What is emotional energy? Emotional energy is the force underlying the motivation for our actions. Emotions give us the fuel to act upon our will. This is why for Scorpio, and for all of us during this Scorpio season, we are challenged to master our emotions.
We are often tasked to honor our emotions and get in touch with them. It’s definitely important to name our emotions as a means to externalize the energy rather than letting it swirl endlessly without resolution. That is the first step in mastering our emotions.
But the challenge we have right now is not about those fleeting emotions that change as often as the moon changes sign which is every couple of days. This New Moon Solar Eclipse in Scorpio is exposing ingrained and unconsciously repeated emotional responses. More often than not, this is fear. Our fears motivate us to seek escape when we encounter unfamiliar emotional territory. Yet we never explore that territory because we’d prefer to remain where we are comfortable.
Many times, comfort comes in the form of wounds. Our deepest inadequacies that come as a result of wounding at earlier times in our lives is what keeps us from our desires. Our desires are beckoning us to grow. For if it is love we want, we must confront our fear of vulnerability and intimacy. We must face how we felt unloved as a child or in previous relationships.
If it is success we want, it is our fear of failure and mediocrity that we must confront. We must define success in terms of our capabilities and limitations (Saturn). Not just in terms of familiar paths we’ve seen others take.
If it is stability that we desire, we must confront our fear of losing control and our fear of the unexpected. The erratic roots upon which our lives seem to be built, moving often or moms and dads who were in and out of our lives, too often define what we are capable of or even what we desire as a means to escape the past.
Well, I told you I like to dig deep. And that is what this Eclipse is all about. Dig deep in your own life. Expose your own weaknesses. Liberate yourself from your unconscious emotional responses. That is the bridge to your desire. And you may find that once you cross that bridge, you may no longer want what you thought you wanted. You’ve transformed from being motivated by fear to being driven by your soul’s longing. Now, that its authentic desire!
